James Benton

James Elbert Benton, born August 15th, 1926 in Little Rock, AR,1 2 was a Negro league baseball player in 1950 and a minor league baseball player from 1955-1956.

Biography

Benton was the son of Chaelie [sic] Benton and Fannie (nee Lindsey) Benton.3 He grew up in Little Rock, AR.

Benton, a large right handed pitcher, began pitching semi-professionally in Little Rock with the Missouri Pacific railroad club during the late 1940s.4 He briefly appeared in 1950 with the Memphis Red Sox of the Negro American League.5 6 He also played that season with the independent Brooklyn Cuban Giants. After several seasons of semi-pro baseball in Seattle, WA, Benton was signed in 1955 by the Lewiston Broncs of the Northwest League, going 8-17 with a 5.79 ERA in 30 games. He returned to Lewiston in 1956 and 12-13 with a 5.18 ERA in 33 games.

Benton died on October 17th, 1999 in Seattle, WA.7
