Merle Porter

Merle McKinney Porter ,1 born January 19th, 19212 in Little Rock, AR,3 4 was a Negro League baseball player from about 1947-1949. He was the brother of Andrew Porter and the uncle of Don Porter.

Biography

Porter was the sixth of eight children born to Philip John Porter Sr. and Violet (nee McKinney) Porter. He grew up on the Porter's family-owned cotton farm near the communities of College Station and Sweet Home in rural Pulaski County, AR5

Porter, a left-handed first baseman, began his Negro baseball career with the New Orleans Creoles in 1947.6 In the fall of that year, he was selected to play in annual North-South all-star game played at Katy Park in Waco, TX on October 9th.7 In 1948, Porter joined the Kansas City Stars,8 a barnstorming team that by mid season billed itself as the Kansas City Monarchs, though it was distinct from the Monarchs club in the Negro American League. Porter remained with the Monarchs through the 1949 season.9

Porter lived most of his later life in Los Angeles, CA. He died on October 6th, 2000 in Los Angeles10
and was buried in Lincoln Memorial Park in Los Angeles. 11
