Little Rock Quapaws

The Little Rock Quapaws were a Negro baseball team based in Little Rock, AR from 1896-1900.

History

The Little Rock Quapaws, along with the Hot Springs Arlingtons, were the first significant Negro baseball team to emerge in Arkansas. The Quapaws first appeared in 1896 and competed with regional teams through 1900. The team's most frequent opponents were their in-state rivals, the Hot Springs Arlingtons, with whom the Quapaws periodically competed for the title of Colored Champions of the Arkansas.1 2 Home games were played at old Association Park in 1896 and at West End Park in subsequent years. Games were typically well attended by segregated crowds of both white and black fans.

In 1897, the Quapaws participated in the formation of a southern Negro league, which in addition to Little Rock was comprised of the Hot Springs Arlingtons, the Memphis Cliffords, Pensacola Acmes, Birmingham Unions, and Montgomery, AL.3 4 5 Although the league was largely a failure, the Quapaws continued to play the remainder of 1897 season. In early September, Quapaws' manager Dave Brown challenged their white counterparts, the Little Rock Senators of the Arkansas State League, to a series of games. The Senators management, needing money to pay the salaries it owed to its players, agreed to play an unprecedented series of interacial games.6 7 The series was held on September 6th, 7th and 8th without incident. The Quapaws played competitively with their white opponents throughout the series, but lost all three games.
