Buddy Allen

Lamar "Buddy" Allen, born November 25th, 1914, in Wilmot, AR,1 was a Negro League baseball player from about 1936-1940.

Biography

Allen was the son of Joseph Allen and Lucy (nee Burgess) Allen and was raised in Pine Bluff, AR.2

Allen played with the Butte Colored Giants in 1936, the El Dorado Black Lions in 1937,3 and the Birmingham Black Barons in 1940.4 5 6 7 He was also an All-American quarterback for AM&N college before coaching the football program at the school from 1942-1951. Allen was inducted into the Southwestern Athletic Conference Hall of Fame in 1999.8

Allen died on May 16th, 1989 in Los Angeles, CA.9 He was buried in Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, CA.10

"The latest addition to the Black Barons is Buddy Allen, star three letter athlete from M & M College [sic] at Pine Bluff, Ark. Allen, after staring in baseball, football and basket ball was persuaded by [Manager Candy Jim] Taylor to enter professional baseball as a Baron."11
